How I Became a Full-Time Travel Photographer in 2024 (And How You Can Too in 2025)

Today, I’m sharing how I became a full-time travel photographer in 2024, even without a massive following and how you can make this your reality in 2025.

At the start of 2024, I committed to my dream of traveling the world with my camera. Now, as the year wraps up, I’m proud to say that photography has become my career. Here are ten practical steps to kickstart your journey as a travel photographer:

1. Keep It Local

You don’t need to spend thousands traveling to exotic locations to build your portfolio. Start small and explore nearby cities or regions. If you’re in the UK, visit cities like London, Manchester, or Bristol. Budget airlines like Ryanair make affordable weekend trips possible, allowing you to build your portfolio without breaking the bank.

2. Gear Up

Invest in gear that works for you and inspires creativity. Ensure your camera or bag has weather sealing—a must for unpredictable conditions. The right gear not only enhances your photography but also makes your workflow smoother and more enjoyable.

3. Do Your Research

Don’t forget research! Knowing key spots in your destination can help reduce the stress of being in an unfamiliar place. Researching locations, cultural norms, and local tips ensures you’re prepared and can make the most of your trip.

4. Reach Out to Creatives

Networking is invaluable. Before visiting Thailand, I reached out to a fellow creator, Sean Dalton, who shared valuable insights and even collaborated with me on a video. Building relationships with other creatives in your field can provide guidance, friendship, and inspiration.

5. Find a Mentor

Having someone experienced to guide you saves time and prevents costly mistakes. That’s why I’m excited to announce my 1-to-1 mentorship program for 2025, now available on my website. If you’re serious about making travel photography your career, I’d love to help you get there.

6. Start a Passion Project

A creative project, like my zine Field Notes, helps you stand out when pitching to clients. Whether it’s a blog, a photo series, or a zine, having a unique project can boost your portfolio and attract opportunities.

7. Leverage Social Media

Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are your virtual portfolio. Consistency is key to building an audience and connecting with brands. Share your journey, from humble beginnings to achieving your dreams, to inspire others and attract collaborators.

8. Build a Website

Your website is your professional hub for showcasing your work, selling digital products, and connecting with clients. I use Squarespace, but there are many options to suit your needs. Start building your online presence today!

9. Streamline Your Workflow

Efficiency matters, especially when you’re on the road. Using presets can save you hours in post-processing while maintaining a consistent style. Check out my Travel Pack Presets on my website to see how it can improve your workflow.

10. Stay Connected

Reliable internet access is essential for staying productive abroad. Invest in a quality eSIM or travel SIM card to ensure you’re always connected.

Conclusion

Travel photography is an exciting and rewarding journey, but it requires dedication, planning, and creativity. By following these practical steps, you’ll be well on your way to turning your passion into a profession. Whether it’s networking with other creatives, investing in the right tools, or finding a mentor, each step brings you closer to your goal.
